John 10:11-18, The Good Shepherd by Mike Roth

This life is full of brokenness and more often than not difficult to navigate. How wonderful would it be to have a shepherd to love and lead and feed us?

Christmas Eve Service by Mike Roth

Christmas Eve service homily

John 14:1-6, Jesus is the Way by John Ross

What does Jesus mean when he claims to be the Way? And how are we to respond to and apply this claim in our lives? Depending on how we read the passage and understand "the Way," we'll arrive at different conclusions. When we read "the Way" accurately as a metaphor, we realized Jesus is more than the way to heaven when we die, he's actually the way to live our lives here and now as his followers who enact the Kingdom of God.

John 8, Jesus: Light of the World by Francis Rubio

It's often easy to overlook how outrageous Jesus is when he claims that he is Light. Our experience of Jesus seems to hang on our decision on whether he is worth believing or if he is as crazy as the Pharisees think he is.

John 6, Meeting Your Needs by Mike Roth

Our allegiance to God is often based on our basic needs being met by him. How then do we respond to Jesus when he shifts the focus away from the needs we think we have and toward the one he purposes to meet?

November

John 8:45-59, The Great I Am by Mike Roth

Advent is upon us. I Am is coming. Will our expectations of Him hinder our ability to rejoice at his coming?

Philippians 4:10-20, Secret to Contentment by Mike Roth

Lack of contentment keeps us from living out Christ's love in this world. Paul addresses this struggle head-on as he concludes his letter.

Philippians 4:2-9, Practice Makes Peace by John Ross

In these verses, Paul exhorts the Philippians to practice various skills and virtues: unity, rejoicing, gentleness, avoiding anxiety and dwelling on good things; claiming that the result of such practicing is a new perspective, called the peace that passes understanding.

Philippians 3:17-21, A Slice of Heaven by Mike Roth

By contrasting enemies of the cross and citizens of heaven, Paul admonishes us to imitate those who live as citizens of heaven. Perhaps in so doing, others might taste a slice of heaven through us.

Philippians 3:12-16, Straining Towards Christ by Francis Rubio

Paul encourages the Philippians to strain toward growing in Christ by moving from the old pattern of thinking about life to a new pattern of thought, which is found in Christ, and to display maturity by thinking, acting, and feeling in a way that identifies with Christ.

October

Philippians 3:1-11, Confidence and Boasting by Mike Roth

Contrasting those whose confidence is misplaced with those whose confidence is properly placed, Paul turns spirituality on its head and exhorts us to do the same.

Redefining the qualifications for Ministry: Philippians 2:19-30 by Christopher Layton

Paul sends Epaphroditus back to Philippi as a surprising representation of Paul's teachings to the Philippians regarding ministering and receiving ministry.

Life in the Desert: Philippians 2:12-18 by Mike Roth

Paul describes the way in which the people of God are to work out their salvation. Surprisingly, the place our salvation is worked out is the very place we try hard to escape.

God’s Glory, Philippians 2:5-11 by Mike Roth

In Isaiah, God declares that he will be glorified. By what means will he be glorified? In Philippians 2, Paul describes the means by which God receives glory in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

September

Philippians 1:27-2:4, Citizenship by John Ross

Paul uses the metaphor of citizenship to talk to the Philippians about their responsibilities as members of God's kingdom. Good citizens work to build and protect unity, reinterpret suffering in light of God's story, and care well for one another from a place of true humility; and they do all of this together, in community.

Philippians 1:12-26, A Real Reality by Mike Roth

It is easy to get caught-up in our own lives and lose sight of what really matters. When this happens our circumstances dictate our interpretation of life. What if we are missing life itself?

Praying Prayers & Dreaming Dreams, Philippians 1:1-11 by Mike Roth

What might Pearl Church be like if we were to continually thank the Lord for each other and dream godly dreams on behalf of one another? This is how Paul begins his letter to the Philippians and it is the result of sharing together in the gospel of Jesus.

Ministry Launch Sunday by Pearl Ministry Team Leaders

Take a moment to hear about various ministries that are launching this fall and prayerfully consider what you might commit yourself to this year. Our hope and prayer is not to busy our lives with activity but rather to intentionally and purposefully take steps to grow as true worshippers who follow after Jesu

August

Our Purpose by Bruce Schuman and Ian Durias

As ministries begin this fall, our elders remind us of our purpose as a church: we exist to truly worship the Lord and to follow Jesus. If we busy ourselves with activity but fail to do these things, then we utterly fail. But, if our activity is oriented by worship and following Jesus, then no matter what we decide to participate in this year, we succeed in the very thing God has created us to be about: being true worshipers and followers of Jesus.

1st John 5:1-21 Good News by Mike Roth

Over the course of the summer, have the words from 1st John overwhelmed you? If so, then chapter five is a must read. John wrote so that we might have fellowship with God and one another, and he wrote so that joy may be made complete.

1 John 4:11-21 by Melissa Monner

John's heart is that people see God, and he informs his readers that people will see God by the way they love one another. This is no ordinary love, but a fearless love--rooted and grounded in being loved by God.

1 John 4:1-10, Testing The Spirits by Mike Roth

In this passage, John exhorts his readers to test the spirits so that they might know truth.

1st John 3:11-23, Christ and Cain by Mike Roth

1 John 2:28-3:10 “The Process of Becoming a Child of God” by Ben Johnson

John declares to us that we are recipients of a wonderful gift from God: we are His children. But he also exhorts us to strive to be what we truly are as we live between the now of our salvation and the not yet of our full transformation as children of God.

1 John 2:18-27, Antichrists Among Us by Mike Roth

In this passage, John declares that it is the last hour and that antichrists are everywhere. It is through this paradigm that John exhorts his readers to navigate their very present situation in ways most do not consider.

1st John 2:12-17, Christ Has Accomplished So Much by Mike Roth

The apostle John pauses in his letter to write a poem that both encourages and affirms. You are invited to pause in your day to listen and be encouraged and affirmed too.

1st John 2:3-11, Assurance that we know God by Mike Roth

Many of us say that we know God, but how can we be sure? Is there a way to be certain? 1st John 2:3-11 answers these questions while exhorting us to walk in the light.

June

Confession and Community by John Ross

The author of 1 John urges his readers to "walk in the light" by confessing their sins. Despite our impulse to keep quiet and cover over our sins, we are called to confess our sins to one another - resulting in communion with God and community with one another.

1st John 1:1-4, A Letter Worth Reading by Mike Roth

The apostle John speaks candidly, frankly, and unabashedly in his first epistle. To some, such writing is offensive and off-turning. However, the first few verses give us a glimpse into the heart of one who can be trusted. Hopefully John's purpose in writing this letter can serve as a context that helps us listen - even to hard words and difficult truth.

Liturgy and Preaching by Mike & John

Liturgy and preaching are a part of our worship every Sunday. What are we trying to accomplish by them? How can we get the most from them? John and Mike try to answer these questions and more as they discuss worship at Pearl Church.

Acts 2:42-47 by Mike Roth

Many of us dream about a church community that looks a lot like the first church in Acts chapter 2, but how many of us are willing to work at achieving it? This sermon is an invitation to a community devoted to being church.

Acts 2:1-41-Pentecost Sunday by Mike Roth

Pentecost is more than an event that occurred a couple thousand years ago. Pentecost is an event that marks life today. It is today's event. It is today's story. And its content continues to shape and form God's people around the world.

Acts 1:1-8 by Ian Durias

We, as Jesus’ disciples, are to be deeply rooted in Christ so that Jesus himself might be said to be doing his work through us

Luke 24 - Series Conclusion by John Ross

Looking back over our Luke Sermon Series, we're reminded that Jesus of Nazareth is in fact the Messiah - a suffering Savior. We, his disciples are called to preach his message of repentance and forgiveness of sins in the most of powerful ways - with our very lives as we embody repentance and forgiveness to the world around us.

Luke 24 by Christopher Layton

The church’s responsibility in light of Christ’s bodily resurrection is to receive and extend the undeserved hospitality of God.

Luke 24:13-35 The Emmaus Road by John Ross

Good Friday Service by Administrator

Our annual Good Friday service complete with liturgy, music, readings, prayers, and reflection.

Luke 22 by Mike Roth

When time is short and life is messy, the things we need to do to ensure we live purposefully are  often the very things we let slide. In Luke 22, Jesus faces this tendency head-on and challenges his followers to not only carve out time for a meal with friends but to attend the meal with a willingness to submit our agenda to the Lord's.

March

Luke 20 by Mike Roth

Sunday's sermon takes a look at Jesus' parable of the wicked tenants. This parable stands as a warning to the religious leaders and religious community. How will we respond to the beloved son? Will we receive him as the rightful heir and owner of the vineyard or will we confuse things and believe that we are the heir?

Luke 18 15-34 by Christopher Layton

Jesus challenges our expectations about pursuing God's Kingdom.  By insisting that we must receive the kingdom as children might receive and not from a position of strength, Jesus turns cultural values about justice upside down.

Luke 14 by Mike Roth

As Jesus continues his journey to the cross, we observe him poke and prod and challenge table etiquette. Not only does the cross demand that we live today with a fresh sense of urgency and a newfound determination, but it challenges us to reconsider the way we go about eating and sharing meals.

Luke 12 by John Ross

In Luke Chapter 12, Jesus teaches his disciples about the power of greed and worry to overwhelm the dreams and concerns they once had for the Kingdom of God. In light of this, he urges them to seek the kingdom first, using their treasure to direct their hearts toward the kingdom, trusting that all other things will be added to them as well.http://pearlchurch.com/sermon_files/09_03_08__Luke_12.mp3

Luke 9:43-62 by Mike Roth

Our series through Luke's gospel makes a major shift as we enter into Lent. Jesus "sets his face toward Jerusalem," telling his disciples that his impending betrayal and death have changed the context of everything. While arguing about who is greatest, who is allowed to do ministry, or seeking vindication when rejected may seem appropriate when the days are long and death is far away, Jesus makes it clear that because time is short and death is just around the corner there is only time to "be great" and follow him with an increased sense of urgency.

Ash Wednesday Service by Administrator

The recording isn't the greatest, but if you were unable to make it to our service Wednesday evening, this may be better than nothing... If you'd like the liturgy to follow along, it's posted in our forums located in the "Community" tab. Look under "Worship and Liturgy Resources". There were lengthy sections of silence in the service for reflection which have been minimized in this version posted online.

Luke 9:10-17 by Mike Roth

Luke 9 reminds us that God is able to accomplish the miraculous through our meager resources. In fact, what seems inadequate to us can be used by God to feed the hungry if we are willing to surrender it to the Lord.

Luke 8:26-9:2 by Mike Roth

Luke 8:26-9:2 challenges us to look beyond the miraculous and to see the healing that comes through Jesus. Are we willing to cross barriers, endure mocking, and get dirty? This might be the only way to bring the outcasts in.

Luke 7:18-35 by John Ross

Luke suggests, by way of a narrative involving John the Baptist, that we may need Jesus to reset or "re-calibrate" our expectations if we are to see him clearly and believe in him as the Messiah. By identifying with John and letting go of our expectations, we are invited to become Jesus' children whose lives begin to mysteriously "prove" that he is in fact the one we've all been waiting for.

Luke 6: 20-36 by Mike Roth

In Luke 6, Jesus challenges our notions of what is blessed and what is woeful. The question for us as followers of Jesus is this: Do we believe that being poor and hungry and sad and disliked is blessed while being wealthy and fed and happy and liked is woeful? Our answer to this question helps us to either obey Jesus' sermon on the plain or to disobey it.

January

Luke 5:17-39 by Mike Roth

Jesus' teaching about his "new wine" comes in the context of four stories Luke uses to raise tension between Jesus and the Pharisees. We are forced to ask ourselves, "what will we do with this Jesus" who upsets the "tables" in our lives and calls us away from comfort? Will we believe his new wine is in fact better?

Luke 4:16-31 by Mike Roth

In our continuing study through Luke, Mike discusses how the gospel is meant to be shared with and heard by everyone. This story beckons us to act as a community where every person is called to participate in the story of Jesus.

Luke 3:1-22 by Ben Johnson

Ben's sermons reminds us to turn away from the temptations in our lives and to instead give ourselves over to God's agenda. Furthermore, we are called to live our lives loving God our Father and being self sacrificing for the lives of others.
