For our September meeting we will be reading Shusaku Endo’s “Silence,” our first novel since starting the small group. (There are several more planned for this year!).  Endo’s book explores what it means to be Faithful, and how we respond in the face of God’s apparent silence.  As we read this month, feel free to post your thoughts in this thread.

This may be of interest:  a review of “Silence” by the author of our last book, William Cavanaugh.

Lean and spare, the prose of Silence captures the most harrowing anguish with a stark restraint. Suffering, sacrifice, and God’s own silence lie at the heart of the novel. A deep moral ambiguity suffuses the story and opens a wound that endures long after the reader puts the book down.

I just got started on the book. The writing is gripping--like the beginning of a good movie, it invites the reader to care deeply about the upcoming events although one can only assume that what is about to transpire is terrible beyond imagination. Yet there is something about how it is written, it gives you the courage to continue peering into the story.  I’m very excited about it (and somewhat dreading what it might reveal about my own heart).
